Florida Steakhouses - a History

10-19-2010 02:17 PM Print

Most agree that Florida is a jewel in the south-eastern corner of the USA. With its fabulous climate and golden beaches lapped by azure waves it's no wonder that people travel from all over the US and indeed all over the world to vacation there. Surrounded by seas teeming with fish, you might think that Florida restaurants would have a particularly nautical bent. And of course there is plenty of fine seafood to be found in the state, but what you may not realize is that Florida has an interesting history when it comes to steakhouses and, as a consequence, a wealth of the best steakhouses are proud to call Florida their home.

Indeed, for many decades this sunny state has been host to the finest steakhouses in the country and large numbers site their head offices in Florida. Back in 1996 the prestigious Wine Spectator magazine took a poll on the best steakhouse in America and there was a tie for the number one favorite. And both were guess where - Florida of course. Tampa's Howard Avenue came equal first with a Miami Beach steak house, The Forge.

The Outback restaurants have branches all over the US but the gem of this idea started in Tampa back in the late 1980s. As is so often the case, a simple conversation, lead to a great idea. Americans love Australia and are intrigued by the Aussie way of life down under - not to mention the great beef there - and so it was that the Outback Steakhouses started life and have gone from strength to strength. Even Crocodile Dundee was impressed.

Another restaurant's name to make your mouth water is of course the much-loved Ruth's Chris Steak House. Now sited all over the USA and overseas, these restaurants had a humble start back in the 1960s in New Orleans. The restaurant was started, by a single mother, called Ruth Fertel. She bought a restaurant called Chris Steakhouse and as part of the terms of contract had to keep the name Chris. While that might have seemed a little strange to her at the time, it seemed to work and she never dropped it. There are now over 120 of these very fine steakhouses serving prime USDA steaks and known for their delicious sizzle factor. The company moved its head office to Florida back in 2006 and they are now based out of Heathrow in Florida.

The sun shines all year round. You can while away your days golfing, fishing or just lounging on the beach and then as night falls choose one of the best steakhouses that abound in Florida. Access is easy wherever you are. If you are based in New York, just chose your car rental New York, get yourself to the airport and jet south. You deserve a break and some good food and there is no time like the present.
